Built in the 1980’s and clad with the all-too-familiar white bathroom tiles of Shanghai's aging building stock, the 2200m² commercial podium at 225 Yanping road is finally getting a much-needed overhaul. Previously used as an internet gaming hall, the neglected building is now being converted into a Grade A office facility in Shanghai's thriving Jing An district.
Much of the building has been stripped back to its original concrete structure, removing decades of ad-hoc modifications and additions. A new facade of polycarbonate will wrap the Yanping road facade, illuminating the tree-lined street. Small areas of the existing concrete shell remain exposed to juxtapose against the sleek new commercial façade.

Inside, a new triple height lobby features a cascading ceiling of LED lightboxes activated by a motion sensor camera. The matrix of light pixels animates to follow visitors around as they circulate through the lobby space.
